Regulation, brokers and what protects a motor trader

Updated

Motor trade insurance itself is a commercial product, but arranging it is a regulated activity, which means there is something you can check and something you may be able to fall back on. Both are worth using.

Check the broker before the premium

Firms arranging insurance in the UK are regulated, and the FCA's Financial Services Register is free and public. Search the firm's name before you send documents or pay anything.

The FCA also publishes guidance on protecting yourself from scams, and the pattern it describes fits this market well: urgency, a demand for an upfront payment, and an entity whose name is close to but not the same as the firm you were introduced to. Motor trade cover is a common target because premiums are large and traders often buy in a hurry.

What being with an authorised firm may give you

Where a policy is arranged by an authorised firm, the Financial Ombudsman Service and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme may be available, depending on the size and nature of your business. The FCA's Consumer Duty sets expectations on firms in respect of retail customers.

None of that is automatic for every commercial buyer, so ask the broker directly whether your business is eligible. It is a fair question and a straightforward one to answer.

The certificate is not the policy

A certificate of motor insurance proves compulsory cover exists. It says almost nothing about the stock limit, the premises cover, the driver conditions or the endorsements.

Traders routinely file the certificate and never read the schedule. The schedule is the document that decides claims.

Keep the paper trail

Schedule, endorsements, driver confirmations, MID entries and the broker's written answers to anything you asked. That collection is what turns a disputed claim into a paid one.

It costs nothing and it is the single most useful thing a small trader can do about insurance beyond buying the right shape in the first place.
